GIA is short for the Gemological Institute of America. It is a non-profit jewelry appraisal organization based in the United States. Founded in 1931, it has developed for more than 80 years. Now it has set up many branches around the world, and it has become the benchmark for diamond grading. Many people come into contact with GIA diamond certificates for the first time, and they do not know what the items on the certificate stand for. Today we will make a clear explaination about the GIA diamond certificate.

Understanding GIA Diamond Certificates

GIA has two main types of diamond certificates: full certificate and small certificate. The full certificate is used for colored diamonds and large carat diamonds. The small certificate is applied to diamonds weighing less than one carat. The biggest difference between them is that the full certificate prints a diagram showing the distribution of inclusions inside the diamond, and its size is also larger. Every diamond has unique inclusions in different shapes and positions, so this diagram can well prove that each diamond is one of a kind. We take round diamonds as an example to explain the details of the certificate. One important point you need to know: GIA will not give cut grades for fancy shaped diamonds.

GIA Diamond Certificate

The left side of the certificate lists key information from top to bottom.

Issue Date: September 01, 2017

GIA Report Number: 6265698118

Shape and Cutting Style: Round Brilliant

Measurements: 5.41 – 5.43 x 3.33 mm

Carat Weight: 0.60 carat

Color Grade: H

Clarity Grade: VS1

Cut Grade: Excellent

Polish: Excellent

Symmetry: Excellent

Fluorescence: None

Clarity Characteristics: Needle, Pinpoint

On the right part of the certificate, you can also see the same GIA report number. This number matches the laser engraving on the diamond’s girdle. There is also a proportion diagram of diamond cutting parameters, grading notes and anti-counterfeit codes. A QR code is attached here too. You can scan the code or visit the official GIA website to check all detailed information of this diamond.

Update: In 2026, Blue Nile stop selling Astor Diamonds. They replace it with Curated Diamonds now. Curated Diamonds bring big good for shoppers, it let customer pick their favorite stones without any stress. There are tons of filter options to use, hunting for nice diamonds won’t feel troublesome anymore. All the following text will focus fully on Curated Diamonds, not the old Astor Diamond line.
Every young girls dream to wear a shiny, eye-catching diamond ring one day. But many people meet a weird problem in real shopping. Some diamonds look dull and dim under any light, while others sparkle brightly no matter indoor or outdoor. Lots of buyers confused and ask why this big gap happen. The answer is simple: every natural diamond in the world is one of a kind, no two stones are exactly same. Even if we put aside the famous 4C standard for a second, different cutting and polishing work create huge differences on key proportion data. Those data include table width ratio, total depth ratio, pavilion angle, crown angle and more. All these separate numbers mix together and decide how much light a diamond can reflect back to human eyes. That’s why some gems glow strong and others look flat. A lot of new buyers don’t know the trick, they keep asking how to find a super sparkling diamond within their budget. Blue Nile launch Curated Diamonds, their top-tier ideal diamond collection, back in 2026. The brand pick out stones strictly through layers of checks, to make sure every single Curated Diamond own outstanding light performance. The stock range is very wide, customers can sort and filter stones by any diamond parameter or their spending limit easily.
All Curated Diamonds come with official certification from GIA, full name Gemological Institute of America. Every qualified stone must go through professional testing machine called BrillianceScope. This device test three core optical features of each diamond: Brilliance, Sparkle and Fire. Professional examiners score each part carefully, only stones get top marks in all three items can be labeled as Curated Diamonds. This strict rule make Curated Diamonds far better than regular loose diamonds on light return, colorful fire flashes and bright white shine.
Blue Nile put optical performance as the most important standard for Curated Diamonds, higher than carat weight or raw stone saving rate. When craftsmen cut rough diamond into Curated Diamond finished product, only 26% of the original rough stone can be kept. This low retention rate is the price for perfect cut. Every Curated Diamond reach Excellent grade on three critical cutting standards: cut grade, polish grade and symmetry grade. Workers do precise, handmade cutting process for hours to hit the perfect balance point. People may not know that Brilliance and Fire are two opposite index, when one goes up, the other will drop down. Cutters need to calculate and adjust every tiny angle to find the sweet spot where both brightness and colorful light work well together. Because the standard is so tough, only one out of one thousand natural diamonds can pass all tests and become Curated Diamonds. It’s a really rare selection.
In the early days, Curated Diamonds only have round brilliant cut stones. Now Blue Nile expand the collection with many fancy shapes. Shoppers can find oval, pear, heart, princess, Asscher cut Curated Diamonds and more styles on their website. Every stone in this line pass multi-layer visual screening. When you watch them with naked eyes, there is no milky haze or brown tint inside the crystal. No milk coffee diamonds exist in Curated Diamonds inventory at all.
We have two shopping plans for different budget levels. If you have enough money to spend, Curated Diamonds from Blue Nile will be your perfect choice. You get guaranteed top sparkle, clean crystal and reliable GIA certificate at the same time. If your budget is tight and you don’t want to waste money, you can send us a message anytime. Our professional diamond consultants will search common loose diamonds that share same light effect as Curated Diamonds. These regular stones skip the strict Curated screening, so their price drop a lot without losing shine. This choice bring amazing cost performance for diamond buyers. You can finally take home a bigger diamond with bright, attractive sparkle without overspending your money. Whether you want a ring for engagement, wedding or daily wear, these high-sparkle stones can satisfy all your needs, and you will not feel stressed when picking out your ideal diamond anymore.

Pear Diamond

As one of the most popular fancy shaped diamonds, pear shaped diamond is getting more and more popular among jewellery lovers all over the world these years. Lots of people choose it as their engagement stone for two simple reasons. First of all, pear diamonds always look bigger in visual size comparing with round brilliant diamonds with the same carat weight. Second, once you wear a pear diamond ring on your finger, it can stretch your finger line and make your hands look slimmer and more elegant. For a standard one-carat pear diamond, its length can reach around nine millimeters, and its width is about five millimeters, this data is a basic reference for new buyers who do not know much about diamond dimension.
If you take out a pear diamond and watch it carefully under soft light, you will see its special outline clearly. One end of the stone forms a smooth half circle, and the other end tapers down to a thin, sharp point. The whole shape looks just like a drop of water falling from the sky, or a single teardrop roll down from someone’s cheek. That is why many people also call it teardrop diamond in daily talk. Anyone who keep an eye on high fashion fine jewelry must have stepped into the boutique of Chaumet before. The brand’s diamond rings fully show the outstanding sparkle and brilliance of pear shaped stones, and they do it better than most luxury jewellery brands. The rings from their Joséphine Aigrette collection have already become timeless classics that represent a whole fashion era. Countless celebrities and royal families pick this series for their important life moments, and this push pear diamonds to become even more trendy in recent market.
There are many world-famous pear shaped diamonds recorded in jewellery history books, and two of them are the most well-known to the public. The first one is the Cullinan Diamond, which weights more than five hundred carats at its rough state. After professional cutting work, this pear diamond owns seventy-four facets in total. People mount this precious stone on the royal scepter of British monarch, and it still stay there as a priceless national treasure up to today. Another legendary pear diamond is the Taylor-Burton Diamond, with an original weight of 69.42 carats. Its first famous owner was Elizabeth Taylor, a super movie star with huge fame in last century. Later, a man named Robert bought this diamond from the previous holder. He sent the stone back to diamond craftsmen for re-cutting, trimming and polishing to fix its uneven surface and boost its light performance. After the rework process finished, the weight of this pear diamond drop to roughly 68 carats, but its fire and clarity got a huge upgrade.

The Ideal Proportion Range for Perfect Pear Shaped Diamonds

Different from round diamonds, fancy shape diamonds like pear do not receive an official cut grade on standard GIA diamond certificates. Gem lab workers can only sum up years of testing experience and sum out a ideal parameter range for pear stones, to help customers pick well-cut pieces with good light return.
The length-to-width ratio is the most important index for pear diamonds. The perfect range stands between 1.5 and 1.7. Stones inside this interval can release the best fire and brightness when light pass through the facets. If the ratio go above 1.7, the pear diamond will turn too slim and long, the half-circle end will look small and unbalanced. If the ratio fall below 1.5, the stone become too short and compact, lose the elegant teardrop feature that pear diamond famous for.
Other key proportions have fixed suitable ranges too. The table width ratio should stay 56% to 60% of the whole stone width. The total depth ratio need to keep between 59% and 62%. For the girdle thickness, medium thickness is the most friendly choice for daily wear; stones with thin or slightly thick girdle are also acceptable, with or without extra girdle facets both work fine.
I will always suggest every buyer check the real diamond in person before pay the bill. You need to avoid pear diamonds with heavy bow-tie effect. The dark bow tie shadow in the center will block light reflection and make the stone look dim and lifeless. Numbers on the certificate can only tell you basic data, you can not picture the actual shining look of a diamond just by reading those parameters. The online diamond retailer Blue Nile shoot high-definition video for every single diamond they sell on their website. When you feel confused and cannot make a final decision between several stones, you can enter their online zoom room to watch each diamond’s live video, rotate the stone and check its light performance from all angles. This online service greatly lower the risk of buying a unsatisfactory pear diamond without seeing real items offline.

Important Update!

JamesAllen and BlueNile have merged into one single brand. The Canada Mark diamonds, which used to be the core signature product of JamesAllen, are gone forever now. Let us take a moment to look back on this once dominant king in the diamond industry.
Canada is one of the world’s major diamond producing country. It is well-known across the whole trade for its top-tier high-quality diamonds. Most of its key diamond mines locate in the freezing tundra areas of northern and northwest Canada. These diamonds own premium quality with affordable prices, so they sell really well across North America and all over the globe. Gahcho Kue Diamond Mine counts as one of the largest diamond deposits on Earth, and it also is Canada’s sixth official diamond mine. Experts predict this mine could bring billions of Canadian dollars in economic revenue for the country. As global demand for natural diamonds keep rising year by year, more Canadian diamond mines keep expanding their operation sizes and launch new mining projects nonstop.

Canada Mark diamonds are noble and luxurious, the true king of gemstones straight from the icy Arctic tundra. Every single one of these stones reflects the stunning beauty of pure natural creation. Back then, JamesAllen, the famous custom diamond jewelry website, let customers own these brilliant gems that glimmer just like northern auroras from the freezing arctic lands. The whole journey of each diamond, from being dug out of mines to fully polished finished stone, was fully transparent and open for every shopper to check.
JamesAllen also rely on its powerful 360-degree high-definition display tech to show every Canada Mark diamond clearly to every website visitor. The zoom function can magnify the stone up to 40 times bigger. Many people don’t know that standard laboratory diamond grading equipment only support 10 times magnification. Simply put, only diamonds with outstanding quality got the confidence to be shown in such clear, huge magnification.
People who often browse the JamesAllen jewelry site could easily spot a CanadaMark tag in the origin column of loose diamond listings. This tag meant those stones mined inside Canada, all certified conflict-free diamonds. Every single Canada Mark diamond came with an official origin certificate to prove its source. If you are a lover of arctic-sourced natural diamonds, you could spend time picking your ideal stone there before the line stopped selling.
Now BlueNile holds a far larger inventory of loose diamonds in its stock library. If you run into any troubles or confusion when picking out diamonds, feel free to leave a message down below to ask us for help.

Oval diamond

There are many different kinds of fancy shape diamonds. Among all these styles, oval cut diamonds are one of the most popular picks for most people. From ancient times all the way to the modern day, lots of celebrities, nobles and high-ranking officials love to wear oval diamonds on their fingers or as pendants. Just like other fancy cut diamonds on the market, an oval diamond with identical clarity, color and carat grade will always carry a lower price tag compared to a standard round brilliant diamond.
One big reason for this price gap is the stone retention rate during the cutting process. When craftsmen cut an oval shape from rough diamond ore, more than fifty percent of the original rough stone can be kept and made into the finished gem. This retention number is much higher than round diamonds of the same carat weight. For this reason, oval cuts are perfect choice for long, rectangular rough diamond crystals that cannot be shaped into perfect round stones without wasting too much valuable material.
The oval cut diamond did not appear out of nowhere. It build upon the classic cutting framework of traditional round brilliant diamonds. Gem cutters kept adjusting, upgrading and optimizing its facet layout year after year, and finally turned it into the modified brilliant cut oval diamond we know and love today. A standard oval diamond features a total of 69 polished facets on its surface. The most ideal golden length-to-width ratio stands at 1.5. To put it simply, the best visual effect comes when the stone’s length is one and a half times its width.
If the length-width ratio go over 1.5, a dark shadow zone will show up right in the center of the diamond when you look at it from the top. This dark patch greatly weaken the diamond’s fire and sparkle, making the gem look dull and lifeless. On the other hand, if the ratio drop below 1.5, the oval will look nothing more than an elongated round diamond, losing its unique elegant outline. But if the cutter hits the perfect proportion range, the fire and light performance of an oval diamond can nearly match that of a top-tier round brilliant. It can catch every ray of light and easily draw every viewer’s attention at first glance.

Oval diamond ring

Standards for Perfect Cut Oval Diamonds

The table percentage of a well-cut oval diamond should fall between 53.0% and 61.5%. The total depth percentage needs to stay within the range of 59.0% to 63.0%. As for the length to width proportion, the acceptable standard interval is from 1.33 to 1.66. When it comes to the girdle, the ideal thickness range is thin to slightly thick. A girdle that is too thin will bring higher risk of chipping during daily wear, while an overly thick girdle wastes carat weight without boosting beauty. Only the thin to slightly thick girdle balance durability and visual attractiveness best.

Symbolic Meaning of Oval Cut Diamonds

An oval diamond owns a soft, gentle outline while still holding a strong sense of unique individuality at the same time. It is the ideal gemstone for people who have clear personal thoughts and dare to turn their plans into real actions. Many people from European and American countries notice that the oval shape looks just like an egg. For this cultural reason, oval diamonds carry the symbolic meaning of endless cycle of life and endless vitality. It stands for constant growth, new possibilities and lasting energy that never fades away.
From the perspective of astrology, oval diamonds suit people born under Aries and Capricorn star signs very well. The traits of these two signs match the energy of oval cuts perfectly. Capricorn people are famous for their persistent, tough and unyielding personalities, never giving up when facing difficulties. Aries people are straightforward, warm and kind, always speaking their true mind without hidden tricks. Both personalities fit the temperament that oval diamonds represent.
Besides its rich symbolic value, the special curved oval shape also brings great advantages when worn on hands. Its stretched outline visually stretch the fingers, making the whole hand look slimmer and more slender. For people with shorter fingers or thicker knuckles, oval diamond rings are a wonderful option to create a more graceful hand silhouette in daily life. Even for those with long fingers, oval diamonds can add extra elegant charm that round cuts cannot provide. No matter set in solitaire designs or paired with side accent stones, oval diamonds always deliver a delicate, eye-catching look on any wearer’s hand.

Diamond Color

The color grading rule for diamond in international jewelry industry is really strict. Every country got their own matching evaluate standard. So you can only judge diamond color grade base on loose diamond, and do the test under strict lab environment. If you test a diamond ring with metal setting, the metal will mess up your judge result. Platinum setting can make diamond look more white, but rose gold will make diamond color grade look lower. That’s why you can not get a fair and right color score when the diamond still on the ring mount. Color grade is only one part that decide diamond quality. Don’t just think a I color diamond always looks better than J color one. You need look at the other three C too: diamond cut, clarity grade and carat weight.

Diamond Color Grading

Diamond rings shine so bright on fingers, the secret is loose diamond work like a prism. It catch natural light and break it into many colorful sparkles. The diamond’s own color acts like a light filter inside. If a diamond is clear and no color, it can reflect more bright rainbow flashes. That make colorless diamond more expensive than light yellow ones. Diamond color grade is a rule to mark how yellow a stone is. Higher grade means less yellow tint inside the crystal. Color is one of the four most important C factors. When people pick loose diamonds, they can’t ignore color. Human eyes first notice how shiny a diamond is, and shine level is heavily effected by color.
Grade D: Total no color. It is the top color level, super rare to find.

Grade E: No visible color. Only professional gem tester can find tiny bit of tint inside. This kind of diamond is really uncommon.

Grade F: Colorless grade. Only jewelry experts can spot little color trace, but it still count as colorless range. They are top quality diamonds.

Grade G to H: Near colorless. You can see soft yellow tint only when you put them next to D-F high grade stones. Diamonds of G and H grade still keep great market value.

Grade I to J: Almost no color. Light yellow shade can be detected easily. They have pretty good value for daily wear.

Grade K to M: Strong yellow color, low fire sparkle. Our wedding diamond ring store do not sell these grades, we tell customers do not choose them.

Grade N to Z: Dark yellow tint, bad light performance. Our shop never provide these diamonds, we also advice buyers stay away from them.

Grading color of diamond

Once a diamond finish cutting, outside things can not change its value anymore. Diamond color will not turn yellow as years go by. It is extremely hard to find a full colorless diamond, so D grade stones are rare and costly. Most loose diamonds have natural mixed tint when they form underground, like green, coffee and brown shades. These unwanted color will drop diamond’s worth a lot. Many shoppers ask, which color grade should I pick when buying a diamond? Everyone know the rule: colorless is best, darker yellow means worse quality. D to F are full colorless group. G to J are near colorless. K to M have clear yellow tone. N to Z carry obvious pale yellow, they almost have no collection value. But fun fact, N-Z yellow diamonds match gold metal very nicely. After Z grade, stones with full rich yellow color belong to fancy colored diamond category.
For daily shopping, better choose H or above I color diamonds. I and J grade still fall into near colorless group, but naked eyes can catch faint yellow shade directly. Fancy color diamonds use different grading rule. Their price depend on how bright and vivid their color is. There are many fancy diamond types: yellow, green, blue, brown, pink, orange, red, black, purple and more. All of them are precious fancy gems. Red fancy diamond is the most valuable one among all colored diamonds.

As one of the most important milestones in love, a engagement ring stands for that you and your partner are ready to talk about marriage and plan your future life together. Lots of people dream to gift their lovers a stunning diamond engagement ring, but many of them face a tight budget and can not afford fancy rings from offline physical jewelry stores. If this is your situation, customizing a diamond ring online will be a perfect choice for you. There are several well-known online diamond custom brands you can trust, including Blue Nile, James Allen, WhiteFlash and Brian Gavin. It’s worth mentioning that James Allen has merged with Blue Nile and they now belong to the same company, so their diamond supply and after-sales services share many similar resources for customers.

How to Customize Your Own Engagement Ring

The whole custom process does not sound complicated, but you need to follow clear steps to get a ring that fits all your expectations. The first thing you need to do is picture the exact style of diamond ring you want in your mind. Every couple hopes their engagement ring is unique and can not be copied by others, so designing an exclusive style carries great meaning. Next, finding a reputable and experienced jeweler to carry out your custom plan is extremely vital. When you send all your design details to the jeweler you pick, you should describe every single detail as clear as possible. Vague descriptions will make the finished ring far away from your imagination and waste both your time and money.

custom Diamond Ring

If you lack design inspiration and have no idea what style to pick at the beginning, you can browse thousands of finished ring samples on those online jewelry websites. The platforms offer a flexible matching mode: you can pick a loose diamond first, then match it with any ring band you like freely to build your exclusive ring. After you finish your combination, the website will generate realistic renderings to show how the final ring looks, so you can adjust the style before placing your formal order.

Set Your Budget and Learn About Diamond 4C Standards

Before you lock down any loose diamond, you have to set a clear budget and pick cost-effective stones based on your financial situation. The core factors that decide a diamond’s price are the famous 4C standards. For most ordinary buyers, diamonds with H color grade and excellent cut are the most cost-efficient option. Under naked eyes, these diamonds look totally clean and shiny without obvious yellow tint. Even if two diamonds own identical 4C grades, there are no two diamonds in the whole world that are exactly the same. Tiny natural differences lead to different price tags for stones of equal grades, so you must check every diamond’s detailed report carefully.

Wedding Diamond Ring

You must stay away from milky, coffee and green tinted diamonds by all means, and never buy stones that look dull and non-transparent. For fancy shaped diamonds like oval diamonds, you need to avoid obvious bow-tie effect which ruins the stone’s beauty and light performance. Meanwhile, skip diamonds with cavity inclusions and other flaws that hurt the diamond’s long-term durability. The 4C system directly decides a diamond’s total value, so you need to choose proper 4C levels matching your own demand and wallet. The 4C rules made by GIA make diamond pricing more transparent for global consumers. Confirming your target 4C standards is like finishing the first big step of your full ring customization journey.

Confirm Your Ring Band Size

Once you select your ideal loose diamond, the next task is confirming the perfect finger size for your ring band. Every person has different finger thickness and length, so one size never fits all. You need to measure your accurate finger circumference to get a suitable size. A easy way people often use is wrapping a thin paper strip around their finger to measure, but this homemade method brings big measuring errors easily. The more precise way is heading to offline jewelry stores and let professional staff measure your finger with standard ring sizers. You can visit two or three different shops to double check your size data before submitting your custom request online.

Wedding Diamond weeding Ring

Besides the size, you also need to pick a proper band width and band style. If the ring band is too tight, it will block blood circulation in your finger and bring constant discomfort. If the band is too loose, the diamond ring may slip off your finger accidentally and get lost easily, which is a terrible loss for any lover.

Choose Your Favorite Ring Band Style

Ring band styles change the whole visual effect of your diamond ring greatly, so you can pick styles based on your personal taste or the shape of your fingers. The market holds countless ring designs with totally different features. Physical shopping malls display many diamond rings, but most of their styles are old-fashioned and out of date. Online custom brands launch much newer, more creative styles for customers to choose. Still, remember the most fancy design means nothing if it does not suit you—only the style that matches you perfectly is the best choice.
You also need to make a decision on stone setting types according to your preference. Some people love simple minimalist designs, such as four-prong setting and six-prong setting, which highlight the central diamond fully without extra decoration. Other buyers prefer luxurious layouts, including cluster setting and halo setting surrounded by small side diamonds to boost the ring’s sparkle.

Free Inner Ring Engraving Service

Nowadays, personalized details become more and more popular in custom diamond rings. Many online jewelers such as James Allen and Blue Nile provide free engraving service for their customers. You can carve meaningful words, special dates, initials or lucky numbers on the inner wall of your ring band. Every time you take a glance at the hidden carving on your ring, warm happy feelings will fill your heart and remind you of your sweet love memories.
After you finish all these preparation steps one by one, you just need to wait patiently for your beautiful custom diamond ring to be manufactured and delivered to your home. When you receive the package and put the ring on your finger, all the time you spend on planning and customizing will feel totally worthwhile.
