GIA is short for the Gemological Institute of America. It is a non-profit jewelry appraisal organization based in the United States. Founded in 1931, it has developed for more than 80 years. Now it has set up many branches around the world, and it has become the benchmark for diamond grading. Many people come into contact with GIA diamond certificates for the first time, and they do not know what the items on the certificate stand for. Today we will make a clear explaination about the GIA diamond certificate.
Understanding GIA Diamond Certificates
GIA has two main types of diamond certificates: full certificate and small certificate. The full certificate is used for colored diamonds and large carat diamonds. The small certificate is applied to diamonds weighing less than one carat. The biggest difference between them is that the full certificate prints a diagram showing the distribution of inclusions inside the diamond, and its size is also larger. Every diamond has unique inclusions in different shapes and positions, so this diagram can well prove that each diamond is one of a kind. We take round diamonds as an example to explain the details of the certificate. One important point you need to know: GIA will not give cut grades for fancy shaped diamonds.
